Geological Disasters: Landslides and Avalanches

Destructive Forces of Nature

Landslides and avalanches rank among the most devastating geological disasters, responsible for claiming countless lives and causing widespread destruction. These natural hazards differ in their nature and occurrence, yet both pose significant risks to communities in vulnerable areas.

Landslides: Devastating Slopes

Landslides occur when large masses of soil and rock slide down steep slopes, often triggered by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, or other disturbances. Loose and muddy soil, common in sloppy terrain, is particularly susceptible to landslides.

Avalanches: Mountainous Mayhem

In contrast, avalanches primarily occur in mountainous regions with substantial snow cover. These events involve the rapid and forceful descent of a mass of snow, ice, and sometimes rock or debris down a mountainside. Avalanches are often triggered by factors such as snowpack instability, seismic activity, or extreme weather conditions.
